Over the years I've read your comments about this place and had no idea where it was or what it looked liked...I didn't even know that Marietta had a 'town' I thought it was just a county....a sprawling suburbia. Well, a small start-up Black production company staged an August Wilson play "The Piano Lesson" over the weekend and they presented it at the Theater on the Square-Alley stage. I was kinda reluctant to go there (at night) because of what I remembered you saying about it, but I wanted to see the play, so I decided to go.
The 'square' was filled with people. Restaurants, shops, movies...it was buzzing. I didn't see many of 'us' and I could have sworn that folks was looking at me 'funny' but it could have been my imagination lol ... anyway, I made it to the play and like all the August Wilson's plays I've seen so far, this one was very good as well. The play was over around 11pm and there were still people out and some eateries opened and although I was hungry, I opted not to eat there. I will say that I was intrigued somewhat being there, perhaps because I remembered your conversations about it and a little because it was interesting in its own way. I doubt if I will be going back anytime soon although sometime they have interesting plays, but the play would have to be worthy of that looooong drive up there...that was a trek.

Glad you enjoyed the play. I used to work in the building and use the parking lot just outside of the theater... until we built a new headquarters building on Canton Road, further out in Marietta. But I worked right there at the Square for 12 years. I NEVER ventured into Marietta Square though. I hated those people and their condescending attitudes. Maybe I'm too sensitive, but I'm always ready to stare people down if need be. Interestingly, the first and only time I ate at a square restaurant (Shillings) was when the professor invited me to meet with him there for lunch. [The guy who set up our laptop network]
The Square itself is a rip-off of the squares in Savannah; same street layout and everything. Savannah, however, has a network of squares near the River Street area. Savannah is our favorite city in Georgia. It's amazing how much more friendly Smyrna is than Marietta and they are in such close proximity.
